COEUR d’ALENE — Jake Brown drove in two big runs in the first game, and the Coeur d’Alene Vikings got good pitching from Colt Rowley and Cody Davenport to sweep the Lewiston Bengals 6-5 and 7-0 in 5A Inland Empire League play on a blustery Saturday at Church Field.

The wins wrapped up the league title for Coeur d’Alene (18-1, 10-0 5A IEL), which will have home-field advantage throughout the Region 1 tournament, which begins May 6.

“Our key today was mental toughness,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “I’ve got nine seniors that have bought in for the last four years; they trust the process. They showed their mental toughness today, and they did what they had to to get a couple more Ws.”

In the first game, Rowley kept Lewiston off the scoreboard until the fourth, when the Bengals scored four times to take a 4-1 lead. Coeur d’Alene answered with four in the fifth, and tacked on another run in the seventh on Carter Friesz’s sacrifice fly.

Lewiston put two on in the seventh and pulled within a run on a sacrifice fly. But Zach Mackimmie, who came on for Rowley with one out in the sixth, got the next batter to ground out to end the first game.

“Colt pitched great,” Mahin said. “He threw a lot of strikes, he competed and he just did a great job.”

In the second game Davenport, one of several Vikings troubled by illness in recent weeks, pitched six shutout innings, allowing two hits and striking out five. Quinton Bunch drove in three runs for Coeur d’Alene, and Rowley went 3 for 4 with an RBI.

“The second game was Cody Davenport being Cody Davenport,” Mahin said. “We kept extending the lead, and he kept throwing zeroes.”

Lewiston dipped to 9-7, 4-6.

Coeur d’Alene wraps up the regular season Tuesday with a 5A IEL doubleheader at Post Falls.

Cd’A’s Swider wins

consolation title

SPOKANE — Chris Swider of Coeur d’Alene won the consolation bracket at No. 2 boys singles at the Inland Empire Tournament.

Swider dropped his first match on Friday, then won four straight in the consolation bracket. He won the consolation title match 6-3, 6-2 over a player from Richland.

His matches were at Central Valley on Friday and at Mt. Spokane on Saturday.

“He played great; really moved well on the court,” Coeur d’Alene boys coach Dan O’Connor said. “He adapted to the environment, which was at times rainy, and today windy and cold.”

Lake City’s Jack DuCoeur won three straight after dropping his first match on Friday, advancing to the consolation finals before injury defaulting at No. 1 boys singles.

“Jack’s been playing pretty well in the past few weeks,” Lake City boys coach Bob Brunn said. “He’s been having an issue with his arm, but he kept holding on.”

Zana Castenada went 3-2, advancing to the consolation finals in No. 1 girls singles for Lake City.

“Zana played her heart out and put together some good matches,” Brunn said. “She was pretty exhausted by the end of the tournament, but I think she’ll get stronger from it. I’m pretty proud of the way she played.”

at Strandberg

SPOKANE — Coeur d’Alene senior Nate Burch edged Lake City’s Jacob Schnatter by .02 seconds to win the 100-meter dash at the Strandberg Invitational at Central Valley High.

“The conditions for that race were horrible,” Coeur d’Alene assistant coach Linda Lanker said of the 100. “They had winds like no tomorrow and it was raining.”

“It was an awesome race,” Lake City coach Kelly Reed said. “When they’ve raced this year, it’s been neck and neck the entire way. Burch won today, but it’s going to be a great battle the rest of the year.”

Carter Gordon won the 400 for Lake City’s boys, which finished third. Angelyca Chapman won the 400 for Lake City’s girls, which finished sixth.

“Carter’s 400 was outstanding today,” Reed said. “Considering the conditions, and the wind, everyone performed really well today. Angelyca won the 400 pretty handily, and ran a great 200 as well.”

Burch also had wins in the 110 hurdles and 4x100 relay for Coeur d’Alene, which finished fifth. Schnatter won the long jump for Lake City, which finished third.

Coeur d’Alene’s Kaitlyn Ward (discus) and Emily Bronson (hammer) had wins for the Vikings girls, who were fourth.

While the hammer and javelin are not sanctioned in Idaho, athletes were able to get written permission from their throws coaches to compete in the event, Lanker said.

“It’s great for our kids because it’s a college and Olympic event,” Lanker said. “It’s really cool that they’re allowed to do that.”

Meet host Central Valley swept the team titles.
