Spring concert featuring NIC Vocal Jazz and NIC Jazz Ensemble on Tuesday

| April 26, 2019 1:00 AM

North Idaho College’s final jazz concert of the semester will be held 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, at Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center.

The Spring Jazz Concert will feature Cardinal Vocal Jazz, directed by Jesse Hampsch. They will perform “Coffee Song” by Hilliard and Miles, “I’ll be Seeing You” by Sammy Fain, “Sunny Side of the Street” by McHugh and Fields and “Dizzy’s Itch” by Vijay Singh. Cardinal Vocal Jazz performs vocal arrangements of new and old songs with four vocalists accompanied by guitar, piano and bass.

The concert will close with a performance by the NIC Jazz Ensemble, directed by Bryan Hannaford. This concert will use an eclectic mix of styles, but most notably music based on the Latin traditions of the salsa and samba. It has been said that “salsa” can be described as a frenzied, hot and wild musical experience that draws upon or reflects elements of Latin culture, regardless of the style. The NIC Jazz Ensemble will be performing “Salsero Viejo,” “Puente Arriba” and “Gibraltar.”

“They all employ Latin rhythmic elements, like salsa and samba, that will make you want to get out of your seat and dance,” Hannaford said.

The Jazz Ensemble will not only play music in the Latin Style, but also traditional jazz big band sounds of Charles Mingus’ “Boogie Stop Shuffle.” The ensemble will also play some funky music with Bob Mintzer’s “Go Go,” and even finish the concert with a nod to the late 1970s with a kicked-up arrangement of Chuck Mangione’s “Feels So Good” featuring Albert Einstein Lassiter on flugelhorn.

This concert is free and open to the public.
