Whitworth’s Logie takes Point Loma hoops job; Pirates promote Jablonski

SPOKANE — The winningest active coach in all of NCAA Division III men’s basketball will be heading to NCAA Division II.

Matt Logie, who has a winning percentage of .847 in his eight seasons at Whitworth University, was announced as the new head coach at Point Loma Nazarene University on Thursday.

Tim Demant, Whitworth athletic director, also announced that associate head coach Damion Jablonski will be elevated to the role of head coach for the Pirates.

Logie posted a record of 194-35 in his eight seasons at Whitworth. He guided the Pirates to six Northwest Conference regular season titles, seven NWC tournament crowns, seven appearances in the NCAA Division III tournament and two trips to the NCAA Division III round of 16. Along the way he became the first coach in NCAA Division III history to reach 100 wins in his first four seasons as a head coach. His winning percentage of .847 leads all active NCAA coaches, regardless of division.

Logie went 113-17 (.869) against Northwest Conference opponents. The Pirates finished 21-6 in 2018-19, the eighth time Whitworth reached 20 wins in his tenure.

Logie takes over a Point Loma program that finished 31-5 and reached the NCAA Division II national championship game this season. He replaces Ryan Looney, who left Point Loma to become head coach at Idaho State. Looney, an assistant coach at North Idaho College in the 2001-02 season, went 69-28 in his three seasons with the Sea Lions.

Jablonski has served on Whitworth’s staff for eight seasons, the last six as associate head coach. Not since Sam Brasch in 1980 have the Pirates promoted an assistant coach to head coach.

Idaho men’s basketball team

signs juco transfer Simmons

MOSCOW — Idaho’s men’s basketball team added another for next season, signing Bruce “BJ” Simmons from Trinity Valley Community College.

“He brings experience, athleticism and versatility to our backcourt with the ability to play both guard positions,” Vandals coach Don Verlin said.

Simmons, a 6-2 guard, joins the Vandals after one season at Trinity Valley in Athens, Texas. Trinity Valley went 28-8 last season, advancing to the NJCAA tournament in Hutchinson, Kan.

At Trinity Valley, Simmons averaged 9.3 points, 1.5 rebounds and 2.8 assists per game, while posting an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.1. He shot nearly 44 percent from the floor, better than 35 percent from beyond the arc and 77 percent from the free throw line. Simmons previously played for Next Level Prep Academy.

He will have three years of eligibility remaining.

“According to the coaches at Trinity Valley, BJ was the ‘glue” guy who sacrificed his individual stats and accolades for the good of their team,” Verlin said.
