Lakeland sweeps into first in 4A IEL

SANDPOINT — Taylor Woolley hit two home runs in the first game, and was the winning pitcher in both games as Lakeland swept Sandpoint 20-13 and 16-1 on Tuesday at Travers Park to break a tie between teams who began the day tied for first in the 4A Inland Empire League.

Destry Brack had seven hits on the day for Lakeland (6-11, 5-1 4A IEL), which is scheduled to play at the Richland Mixer on Saturday.

Sandpoint dipped to 3-9, 3-3.

COEUR d’ALENE — The host Vikings kept the unbeaten Timberwolves off the scoreboard until the fourth inning of the opener, and led going into the fifth inning of the nightcap, before Lake City got its bats going for the 5A Inland Empire League sweep at Larry Schwenke Field.

With the wins, Lake City (16-0, 8-0 5A IEL) clinched a tie for the league title, and also clinched the top seed for the 5A Region 1 tournament in two weeks.

In the opener, Lake City broke a scoreless tie with three runs in the fourth, highlighted by Ashlynn Allen’s two-run homer. Emma Gray added a two-run single in the fifth, and Abby Jankay had a two-run double in the seventh.

Ashley Kaufman struck out nine in five innings for Lake City, and Natalie Sell fanned six for Coeur d’Alene (7-4, 4-4).

In the second game, Olivia Zufelt’s two-run homer in the top of the first helped stake Lake City to a 3-0 lead.

But Coeur d’Alene responded with four runs in the bottom of the first, keyed by RBI singles by Mary Comack and Sell. Skyler Burke’s RBI single made it 5-3 Vikings in the second.

Lake City took the lead for good with six runs in the fifth inning, highlighted by Jalyssa Beamer’s two-run single.

“I just feel like we’re getting better and better each time we see them,” Coeur d’Alene coach Bobbi Darretta said. “We were hitting the ball; I was very happy with their effort at the plate, especially in the second game.”

Lake City is scheduled to play host to Post Falls in a 5A IEL doubleheader on Friday. Coeur d’Alene is slated to travel to Lewiston for a pair of league games Saturday.

SPIRIT LAKE — Becca Malloy struck out 10 in a five inning one-hitter and Bernie Carhart had nine strikeouts for the Tigers in a sweep of the Badgers in Intermountain League play at Timberlake High.

“Both of our pitchers threw really well again,” said Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci, whose team has won eight straight games, all in league. “We’re just playing good ball and getting better each time we go out and play. Both Becca and Bernie are getting more confident out there.”

Maddy Salois doubled twice and drove in three runs in the first game and Kyndal Lindley finished the day with four RBIs, three coming in the second game for Timberlake (10-1, 8-0 IML), which faces Kellogg on Thursday at Kellogg Middle School.

MOSCOW — Madison Cordell and Gracie Barden drove in three runs each in the opener, and the Lumberjacks went on to sweep the Kubs in Central Idaho League play.

In the second game, Elizabeth Ragan doubled and tripled, scored two runs and drove in one for St. Maries (4-4, 3-2 CIL). Madison Cordell drove in three runs for the Lumberjacks.

St. Maries is scheduled to play host to Orofino on Friday in CIL play.
