Davenport battles as Viks sweep
COEUR d’ALENE — After seeing his senior pitcher return from illness, Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin let Cody Davenport have it on Tuesday.
No, not like that.
Davenport, who had missed the previous week with the flu, allowed four runs in the first inning, then held visiting Lake City in check as his team rallied for a 10-9 win in the first game of a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader at Ted Page Field on Tuesay.
“Cody did a great job today,” Mahin said. “He came back to practice and the plan was to throw him about 45 pitches to get his energy back. That first inning didn’t go like he wanted it to, so we let him go a little longer and he really battled today. He gave us everything he had.”
Devon Johnson had three hits and three RBIs in the opener for Coeur d’Alene, which also claimed the nightcap 7-1 to get the sweep.
“I challenged them between games and they had a stellar game in the second game,” Mahin said. “We hit the ball well, and got back to playing our type of baseball.”
Coeur d’Alene (15-1, 8-0 5A IEL) hosts Lakeland on Thursday at 3 p.m.
Bridger Rinaldi hit a two-run homer in the first inning of the first game for Lake City (5-9, 2-6), which hosts Post Falls in a doubleheader starting on Friday at 2 p.m.
“I thought we had some good at-bats,” Lake City coach Paul Manzardo said. “We didn’t play a complete game. We’d play parts of that (first) game really well, and other parts we need to clean up. We’ve still got four games left in league, and anything can happen.”

Cole Rutherford scored two runs for Post Falls, which led the game 7-1 after two innings, then had to hold on late after Kyle Van Boeyen hit a grand slam for Lewiston in the fifth inning — one batter after the Trojans dropped a fly ball that would have ended the inning — to cut the deficit to 7-5.
In the opener, Van Boeyen hit a two-run single with two outs to give the Bengals the lead in the sixth inning. Cripps singled leading off the second inning and scored on a Lewiston error in the second inning.
