Lake City boys, girls win at Post Falls invite

POST FALLS — On a day with beautiful weather for golf, playing an extra hole shouldn’t bother anyone. And it could provide good experience for postseason play.
The Lake City boys and girls teams won the Post Falls Invitational on Monday, both via a one-hole playoff at The Highlands.
In boys play, the T-wolves and Coeur d’Alene sent out their top five golfers on the par-5 10th hole, with the combined top four scores determining the winner. Lake City edged the Vikings by one stroke.
“Post Falls did the same playoff format we’ll see at regionals and state,” CHS coach Bryan Duncan said. “Each team had only one player shoot par, and the rest were bogeys or worse.
“Even though we lost (the playoff), I was real happy to see our kids in that situation,” he added. “It was a good learning experience to play under that kind of pressure.”
Lake City’s Cameron Johnson earned medalist honors with a one-under-par 71, and teammate Davon Sandford was close behind with a 75, good for fourth place among individuals.
Post Falls finished third in the boys team standings, led by Jacob Glenn’s third-place 73. Wyatt Williams led the Coeur d’Alene boys with a 77.
“It was a tremendous collective effort for both the boys and girls today,” Lake City coach Troy Anderson said. “I was very impressed with Cam going low on a day where not a lot of low scores were out there. He had a lot of support throughout the day from his teammates to beat a really good CHS team.”
- Kyla Currie’s 86 led a quartet of Lake City golfers shooting in double digits, and the Timberwolves topped Lewiston in a one-hole playoff.
“The girls did a great job of responding to the challenge of a playoff win after a long day on the course,” Anderson said of the victorious LCHS girls team.
Coeur d’Alene’s Martina Hicks was second among individuals, firing a 86 to finish second behind Moscow standout Makena Rauch, who shot an even-par 73.
“I was really proud of Martina’s round,” Duncan said.

COEUR d’ALENE — Amanda Curry and Phoebe Schultze teamed on a three-hit shutout in the second game as the Timberwolves swept the Chiefs in nonleague play.
Olivia Zufelt’s home run leading off the fourth inning broke a scoreless tie in the nightcap for Lake City (14-0). Three batters later, Jalyssa Beamer hit a two-run homer — her third of the day — and Abby Jankay added a solo shot in the sixth.
In the opener, Moses Lake pulled within 3-2 on Laurissa Martinez’s two-run single in the top of the fourth. The Timberwolves answered with a run in the bottom of the inning, then Beamer’s three-run homer highlighted a four-run fifth, and Emma Gray’s two-run shot keyed a three-run sixth. Beamer’s two-run homer in the second made it 3-0.
“The scores did not reflect how close the games really were,” Lake City coach Jesse Lenz said. “Jalyssa Beamer really sparked us in the first game and had a great day at the plate. Moses Lake tightened the (first) game to 3-2, and I was really proud of how the girls responded as a team. Hopefully we can take this momentum into the league games tomorrow.”
Lake City travels to Coeur d’Alene today for a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader starting at 2.

Cd’A boys, girls top East Valley
The Viking boys swept all seven matches in Spokane Valley, including a tiebreaker victory by Nez Ogle and Kobie DeLeonard to win the No. 1 doubles match in Spokane Valley.
In girls play at Coeur d’Alene High, the Vikings split the four singles matches and swept the three doubles contests. The winners included Sarah Swider in No. 2 singles, who rebounded from a second-set loss to win the deciding third set 6-2.
“I’m really pleased with how she regained her focus,” CHS girls coach Laura Taylor said of Swider. “And all my doubles players had great matches today.”
The Vikings face crosstown rival Lake City today, with the boys playing at Lake City High and the girls competing at Coeur d’Alene High.
