Family caregiver workshop coming to Coeur d'Alene

The Alzheimer’s Association, Washington State Chapter is bringing a six-week educational program for family caregivers to Coeur d’Alene.

The workshops, called “Powerful Tools for Caregivers,” will be held Thursdays, May 2 through June 6 from 1 to 3:30 p.m., at the Area Agency on Aging of North Idaho, 2120 N. Lakewood Drive, Coeur d’Alene.

The program is free and open to all unpaid family caregivers, not just those caring for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

“The workshop was originally designed for Alzheimer’s caregivers, however they’ve discovered that the techniques explored create a healthier life for all caregivers no matter what the ailment,” said PJ Christo, outreach coordinator at the Alzheimer’s Association, Washington State Chapter, which also serves North Idaho. “This workshop is designed specifically for families who have a loved one at home, in a facility or even long distance.”

The workshops are designed to help family caregivers learn strategies to reduce stress, communicate well and navigate family dynamics while making tough decisions. The workshop will help caregivers build confidence in their decisions as they learn effective problem-solving skills and connect with helpful resources.

“Powerful Tools for Caregivers” is an award-winning program that has helped thousands of family caregivers find balance when caring for a loved one. “This enhances not only their quality of life, but also helps enable them with the patience required to continue to be a successful caregiver. This, in turn, enhances their care recipient’s life as well,” Christo said.
