Students of the Kootenai Technical Education Campus (KTEC) captured numerous individual and team honors in the 2019 SkillsUSA competition April 4 and 5 in Boise.

Students from KTEC participated in hands-on skills contests in conjunction with a written exam. Students were judged on professionalism and work readiness based on a resume and, in some contests, in a job interview.

Students who placed first in Idaho are eligible to compete at the National SkillsUSA competition in Louisville in June.

KTEC raked in eight honors: Robert Torgerson and Ben Finney placed first and second in construction; Zach Petersen placed second in diesel technology; Tristan Bell placed first in precision machining for the automated manufacturing program; Seth Haddy placed second in the solo welding competition; Todd Mendenhall placed third in computer information technology; Derin Crouch, Chris Brinkmeier and Gavin Peterson placed first in the welding fabrication team event; and Matt Etherton placed first in auto collision and repair.

“I am super proud of our students' performance at this event,” said KTEC’s director, Colby Mattila. "The number of students we had place from KTEC is amazing. We entered students in eight different contests and had medalists in six of those.”

KTEC will hold an open house for the whole community from 5:30 to 7 p.m. May 1. KTEC is located at 6838 W. Lancaster Road, Rathdrum.
