Karns steps up for Viks in sweep

| April 17, 2019 1:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — With its slated opening game starting pitcher out with the flu, Coeur d’Alene turned to a sophomore to shut down a league rival when it needed it.

Alex Karns struck out four over five innings for the Vikings in a 13-3 win in the first game of a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader against the Bengals at Ted Page Field.

“Alex threw a great game,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “Cody (Davenport) had the flu, and couldn’t even make it to the field. We called on the sophomore (Karns), and he really shut them down.”

Colt Rowley drove in three runs in the opener for Coeur d’Alene.

In the nightcap, Zach Mackimmie allowed four hits over 6 1/3 innings as the Vikings held off the Bengals 3-2 for the sweep.

“We had a chance to break it open, but just couldn’t seem to get it done,” Mahin said. “Zach threw a heck of a game. Our bats went a little quiet, and (Lewiston pitcher Dalton) Stamper did a good job of keeping us off balance. We had a good day defensively and got a big sweep.”
