Area prep, college athletes, teams enjoy night in the spotlight

COEUR d’ALENE — Oklahoma State softball All-American Vanessa Shippy, a former Lake City High standout, and University of Idaho women’s basketball star Mikayla Ferenz shared College Female Athlete of the Year honors at the 57th North Idaho Sports Awards banquet Saturday night at The Coeur d’Alene Resort.

RayQuan Evans, who led North Idaho College to a second straight Northwest Athletic Conference men’s basketball tournament title, and is attracting Division I recruiting interest, was named College Male Athlete of the Year.

Evans’ coach, Corey Symons, was named College Coach of the Year.

On the high school level, Kale Edwards and Carter Friesz of Coeur d’Alene shared 5A-4A Male Athlete of the Year honors. Klaire Mitchell and Ashley Kaufman of Lake City shared 5A-4A Female Athlete of the Year honors, and Brooke Stevens of Clark Fork was named 3A-1A Female Athlete of the Year.

Among the high school coaches honored were Pete Reardon, Post Falls wrestling; Tom Turpin, Bonners Ferry baseball; Conor Baranski, Sandpoint girls soccer; and Stacy Smith, Coeur d’Alene Charter Academy girls soccer.

Big- and small-school awards were also handed out in each of the high school sports.

Also Saturday, four people were inducted into the Idaho Athletic Hall of Fame — longtime Pac-12 Conference football official Steve Hudson of Coeur d’Alene, former University of Idaho football coach and player Chris Tormey, former Moscow High and New York Giants offensive lineman Doug Riesenberg, and Nancy Monroe, former UI swimmer and volleyball player, and the first UI women’s athlete to receive a scholarship.

The Hall of Fame membership now totals 240.
