McDonald's no-hitter helps Timberlake sweep Bonners

SPIRIT LAKE — Timberlake wanted to show Bonners Ferry there was a new boss in the Intermountain League this season.
Junior Jack McDonald was the first to lay down the law on Friday at Timberlake High.
McDonald, a left-hander, struck out 11 over five innings in a no-hitter of the first game of a 13-0 and 17-3 sweep of the Badgers in the IML opener for both.
“It was an all-around good day for us,” Timberlake coach Cameron Knigge said. “We hit the ball really well and our guys are really hitting their stride. I thought all of our guys 1 through 9 did their job at the plate.”
Jacob Hessing struck out five in the nightcap for Timberlake (3-6-1), which hosts Kellogg in a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
Bonners Ferry won the state 3A title last year.
“It was nice to come out and get two league wins off the bat against Bonners,” Knigge said. “I told our guys before the game that there was a new sheriff in town.”
McDonald and Zac Larsen had three RBIs each in the second game for Timberlake.

BONNERS FERRY — Ashlyn Mallet drove in 15 runs, nine in the first game, as the visiting Tigers clobbered the Badgers in the Intermountain League opener for both schools.
Mallet hit a three-run homer in the first game and finished 3 for 4 and scored four runs. She was 4 for 5 in the second game and scored three runs.
“Ashlyn Mallet just hit the crap out of the ball,” Timberlake coach Casi Lupinacci said. “We just played good ball all the way around.”
Kyndal Lindley went 4 for 6 and scored four runs for Timberlake (4-1, 2-0 IML) in the opener, and Jaycee Jerome and Taylor Suko each drove in three runs. Becca Malloy pitched a two-hit shutout over five innings.
In the second game, Bernie Carhart struck out six for the Tigers, and also went 4 for 6 with five RBIs and six runs scored. Lindley was 3 for 6 with three RBIs and four runs scored.
Timberlake plays host to Kellogg on Tuesday in an IML doubleheader.

RATHDRUM — Kathryn Wardak, Haylee Smit and Taylor Woolley teamed on a two-hitter with seven strikeouts as the Hawks beat the visiting Cardinals in the first game of a nonleague doubleheader.
Mia O’Hara hit a three-run homer in the fourth inning for Lakeland (3-10). Woolley went 3 for 4 and scored three runs.
Allison Russum finished with four hits on the day for the Hawks. She was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and two runs scored in the second game.
Lakeland is scheduled to host Colville today in a doubleheader starting at noon.

Post Falls’ Jacobsen, Spooner each win pole vault
MOSCOW — Carson Jacobsen and Hailey Spooner of Post Falls each beat out two teammates to earn top honors in the boys and girls pole vault at the Moscow Invitational at Bear Field.
Jacobsen won the boys event with a mark of 12 feet, 6 inches and was followed by Lars Horning and Jacob Howlett. Spooner’s vault of 9 feet won the girls event, followed by Kennedy LaFountaine and Amelia Madsen.
Post Falls was runner-up to Moscow in both boys and girls team scoring.

Genesis Prep wins
Mullan tourney with
funky format
PINEHURST — Genesis Prep won in the girls two-person scramble and the Jack and Jill scramble to win the Mullan Invitational at Pinehurst Golf Course.
Teams played in five two-person team competitions, each pair earning points toward their school’s team score. This was the second year the event has had this format. The winner gets to keep the traveling trophy until next year’s event. St. Maries won last year.
“Obviously it’s something different than we normally do in high school golf,” said Mullan golf coach Paul Elston, the tourney organizer. “I was trying to make high school golf a little more fun.”
