CHS boys finally get on the course, earn trophy

LEWISTON — The record-setting, late-winter snowfall was great for skiers, but not so much for high school golfers.

North Idaho teams are trying to fit an entire season of tournaments into a four- or five-week stretch, with Coeur d’Alene’s boys golfers seeing their first action on Monday in Lewiston.

The Vikings got off to a good start, taking first among seven teams at the rescheduled Lewiston Invitational at Bryden Canyon Golf Course.

CHS senior Brayden Ogle shot an even-par 71 to earn medalist honors, and three teammates — Jackson Davenport (77), Wyatt Williams (78) and Cole Jaworski (78) — joined him with sub-80 rounds.

“In our very first varsity team event, I was very pleased to see four boys in the 70s,” Vikings coach Bryan Duncan said.

“Brayden didn’t have his ‘A’ game going, but as a senior, he can still figure out how to score well. And Cole Jaworski, a freshman who won a playoff for our fifth spot, played very well in his first varsity tournament.”

Lake City’s boys, who also saw their first varsity action of the season, finished second behind seniors Ryan Chapman (78) and Davon Sandord (79).

“It felt good to get out on the golf course for a change. These were our first full rounds of the season,” Timberwolves coach Troy Anderson said. “We were a little rusty, with things we need to work on, but overall I thought it was a pretty good effort.”

POST FALLS — The host Trojans and visiting Hawks played roughly 11 innings before darkness ended Monday’s second game without an official result.

Post Falls (3-3) won the opener of the scheduled doubleheader behind the strong pitching of Austin Higgins (4 scoreless innings), errorless defense and a 2-for-2, 4 RBIs performance from Kevin Lebsock.

“Kevin knocked in half of our runs, and Austin did really well on the mound,” Trojans coach Mick Zeller said. “He only walked one, scattered a couple hits and kept his pitch count down.”

Cole Rutherford and Jake Burton added two hits apiece for Post Falls, which begins 5A Inland Empire play on Saturday with a doubleheader at Lewiston.

Lakeland was ahead 4-0 through four innings when game 2 was called, and although coach Jason Bradbury would have liked to close out the win, he was happy to get four strong innings from his team in this weather-shortened season.

“Even though we didn’t get a full second game in, I was super happy with the outcome,” Bradbury said. “Collin Bell did a great job on the mound throwing strikes and keeping Post Falls off balance.

“Our offense backed him up nicely. We played small ball and executed very well. Isaac Silva, Vanner Hegbloom, and Justin Dennison all had RBI singles in key situations where we would steal or hit-and-run while they were at the plate,” he added. “It was great to see my guys execute and play the game at a high level. I’m very pleased with them and hope we can keep the momentum going into league play.”

Bell had four strikeouts over his four hitless, scoreless innings, and senior Jaret Taylor had three hits on the afternoon for the Hawks (1-6-2), who open 4A Inland Empire play on Thursday against visiting Sandpoint.
