- SOFTBALL

RATHDRUM — Ashley Kaufman homered and drove in five runs as the visiting Lake City Timberwolves, in their first game in 26 days, beat the Lakeland Hawks 13-4 in a nonleague softball game Thursday.

Kaufman, who finished 4 for 4, hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and a two-run single in the fifth for Lake City (6-0). Emma Gray also homered for the T-Wolves, and Jalyssa Beamer went 2 for 2 and scored three runs.

Alaina Pruitt and Harlee See hit back-to-back homers to open the third inning for Lakeland (0-5). See and Hailey Gosch each had two hits for the Hawks.

“It was nice to get back outside with the weather finally cooperating,” said Lake City coach Jesse Lenz, whose teams first five games were played in St. George, Utah, in early March. “Ashley Kaufman had a big day at the plate, and Lakeland was really impressive with their at bats and fielding. We have things to work on, but I think we got better today and were put in situations that will help us in the future.”

Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua was delighted how her team played against a 5A power — particularly after a rough stretch to open the season.

Some position changes helped, she said.

“It’s been really tough because we went from being in the gym to lots of games — the games have been practice for us,” Bevacqua said. “I was really proud of how they did, especially playing an awesome team like Lake City. They did an awesome job.”

Lake City has another extended break before its next game, though not quite as long — the Timberwolves are scheduled to host Coeur d’Alene next Friday in a doubleheader to open 5A Inland Empire League play.

Lakeland is scheduled to host Moscow on Saturday in a doubleheader to open 4A IEL play.

Lakeland 10 (9 inn.)

RATHDRUM — The good thing for district rivals Timberlake and Lakeland is that both teams got plenty of at-bats in the nonleague game at Gorton Field.

The bad thing — depending on who you ask — is that neither team won.

Addison Balavage hit a two-run single with two outs in the seventh to tie the game for Timberlake (1-5-1), which took the lead on an RBI double by Jack McDonald. Lakeland tied the game on a single by Sean Tierney with two out in the seventh.

“We never quit,” Timberlake coach Cameron Knigge said. “Addison, our No. 9 guy, it was really good for him to come through for his confidence going forward.”

Knigge also coaches in the Northern Lakes American Legion program, which includes players from Lakeland and Timberlake High.

“Nobody likes a tie, but for as hard as both teams played, it was an acceptable outcome,” Knigge said. “We pitched and hit the ball really well, but our defense just needs to play better.”

Collin Bell went 5 for 5 with two runs scored, Colton Aragon and Tristan Clift had two RBIs each for Lakeland (1-5-2), which travels to Post Falls for a doubleheader on Monday starting at 3 p.m.

Timberlake 020 011 330 — 10 8 6

LEWISTON — Kyla Currie shot a 76 to pace the Lake City girls to a second place finish in the Lewiston girls Invitational at Bryden Canyon Golf Course.

Marisa Hagerty shot 91 and Echo Anderson 95 for Lake City, which finished four strokes behind Lewiston for the team title with a 362.

I now having some real high expectations for this team moving forward. It was great to see Kyla, Marisa and Echo turn in good scores today because they worked really hard on their games this winter, and it paid off for them today.”

Martina Hicks shot an 89 for Coeur d’Alene, which finished with 412.

“We didn’t score that bad,” Coeur d’Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. “We’ve got a ways to go, but I think they’ll make it at the end of the season.”

Moscow’s Makena Rauch shot a 6-under 65 to earn medalist honors, one stroke off the course record according to Duncan.
