Vikings start fast, down Lakeland
COEUR d’ALENE — As a team goal this season, the Coeur d’Alene High baseball team wants to start fast.
On a rainy day Wednesday, the Vikings did just that, scoring four runs in the first inning on the way to a 12-2 win over the Lakeland Hawks at Ted Page Field.
“It was a good, team baseball win,” Coeur d’Alene coach Nick Mahin said. “We came out strong in the first inning, and that’s been one of the goals to score first this year. We were able to put up a crooked number and it gave our pitchers some confidence. We turned some double plays, which was nice considering how wet it was, and just rode the backs of our pitchers.”
The second game of the doubleheader was rained out after a storm hit between games. Mahin added the teams will try to reschedule the game.
Liam Paddack allowed two earned runs in three innings before Zach Mackimme closed it out with three scoreless innings of relief for Coeur d’Alene.
“Liam was effectively wild today,” Mahin said. “He didn’t give in, and when he got into hitters’ counts, he made them earn it. Zach just went out and did his thing and pounded the zone.”
Jake Brown and Cody Davenport had three RBIs each for Coeur d’Alene (6-1), which is scheduled to host Asotin on Tuesday.
Lakeland (1-5-1) is scheduled to host Timberlake today at 4 p.m.

Walla Walla 2-10
WALLA WALLA, Wash. — Brock Sween and Ryan Rios combined to allow four hits for the Timberwolves in the opener against the Blue Devils.
Marcus Manzardo, Bridger Rinaldi and Harrison Reid had two hits each, with Reid driving in two runs in the opener.
“Brock and Ryan pitched really well in that first game,” said Lake City coach Paul Manzardo. “We had some key hits with Marcus, Bridger and Harrison having good games. We played pretty solid defensively and got some clutch hitting when we needed it.”
In the nightcap, Walla Walla scored five runs in the bottom of the fourth to earn the split.
“We just had a rough fourth inning and had a hard time locating the strike zone,” Manzardo said. “We made a couple of mistakes defensively, and they kind of clawed back into it. We battled, but just ran out of time.”
Lake City is scheduled to visit Lakeland on April 11.
