Beginner BMX Racing League

scheduled for Cherry Hill Park

COEUR d’ALENE — USABMX has started a beginner BMX Racing League, and one for boys and girls ages 4-15 is scheduled to run at Cherry Hill Park in 15th Street on Saturdays starting May 11.

The league is slated to run each Saturday from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. through June 8. A pizza party and awards ceremony is scheduled at the conclusion of the final week of racing.

Open racing is scheduled for the following Saturday, June 15.

Racers older than 15, as well as adults, can also participate in a BMX Racing League.

A free open house is scheduled for Saturday, April 27 from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Cherry Hill Park.

releases first book

Dave Herman, who covered local sports for The Coeur d’Alene Press from 1993-1998, has released his first book. It’s called “Almost Yankees: The Summer of ’81 and the Greatest Baseball Team You’ve Never Heard Of.”

The book tells the story of his first favorite team, the ’81 Columbus (Ohio) Clippers — the top minor league affiliate of George Steinbrenner’s New York Yankees. Published by University of Nebraska Press, “Almost Yankees” also includes reflections from Herman’s life as a baseball fan, including his time in Coeur d’Alene and Spokane.

Herman has spent the past 17 years working for Microsoft, including his current position as a senior managing editor for Microsoft News.

“Almost Yankees” is available on Amazon.com and other online retailers.

Idaho sharpshooter Pierce

selected for 3-point contest

Idaho guard Taylor Pierce was selected to the Women’s 3-Point Championship roster for the 31st annual State Farm College Slam Dunk & 3-Point Championships at Minneapolis’ Target Center on Thursday.

Pierce is one of eight women’s college basketball players selected for the event that will air live on ESPN at 6 p.m. PDT.

Pierce, who owns the NCAA single-season record for 3-pointers made with 154 this year, leads the nation as the top 3-point shooter making 4.53 triples per game. That mark gives her the No. 1 spot in NCAA history for 3s made per game in a season. Pierce finished her career with a school- and Big Sky-record 472 3-pointers — tied for the second most in NCAA history. She finished her Idaho career with 1,934 points. As a senior, Pierce averaged 19 points per game and earned an All-Big Sky First Team selection as the Vandals advanced to the third round of the WNIT.

CENTRALIA, Wash. — Tyson McGuffin of Hayden, former pickleball instructor at Peak Fitness in Hayden and Coeur d’Alene, captured gold in the open singles division of the 2019 International Indoor Pickleball Championships held March 26-31 at Northwest Sports Hub.

McGuffin, the top-ranked professional pickleball player in the world, also teamed up with his playing partner and coach, Morgan Evans, to capture silver in the Men’s Doubles Open division.

McGuffin travels the country teaching pickleball ‘bootcamps.’

Adult women’s 3-on-3 tourney

coming up at L-C State

LEWISTON — Lewis-Clark State’s women’s basketball team is hosting a Conquer the Court 3-on-3 basketball tournament on April 13 at the LCSC Activity Center, beginning at 9 a.m.

The cost per team is $80 if registered before April 13, and $100 to register on the day of the tournament. There is a cash prize of $100 for the Open League champion and each team is guaranteed a minimum of two games. Each team can have up to four players.
