Coeur d’Alene 17, Ferris 7

SPOKANE — The Vikings put 10 runs on the board in the first inning, then used a four-run sixth inning to end the game via the 10-run rule.

Although played in Spokane, Coeur d’Alene (5-1) was the home team, and jumped on the Saxons early. Following several walks, Carter Friesz belted a 3-run triple.

“We had another big first inning, which is one of our team goals — to score first,” CHS coach Nick Mahin said. “Their pitcher was a little wild and we took advantage, with Carter’s triple setting the tone for us.”

After Ferris hit three homers to plate seven runs, the Vikings closed it out in the sixth with a two-run double by Cody Davenport and a game-clinching RBI fielder’s choice by Landen Thompson.

The junior earned the win with three innings of relief, allowing three hits and striking out five.

“Landen was throwing strikes, and when you’re consistently around the plate, a good team like Ferris will get a few hits,” Mahin said. “I thought he handled himself well on the mound, kept his composure, then hustled to beat out a double-play ball and allow us to score the winning run.”

Colt Rowley had two hits, a stolen base and three runs scored for Coeur d’Alene, which hosts Lakeland in a Wednesday doubleheader.
