WITCHES: The hunt is on
Kudos to Denise Graves for her succinct, articulate letter of Sept. 23 setting forth “ground rules” for the Me Too movement, and pointing out “men are not the enemy.” From its first appearance, this movement has brought to my mind the Salem, Mass., witch hysteria and subsequent trials of the early 1600s.
Few can refute the world’s tragic legacy of the abuse of women. But with the instant transmission of information — or mis-information — on social media, when everyone wants to register his or her own experiences on any subject, group hysteria is all too easy.
Teenage girls among others brought about the deaths of innocent people during the Salem witch trials, using only word-of-mouth information transmission. How much faster can this kind of insanity explode today?
