Todd Hudson golf tourney: Doing it the 'Huddy Way'

You know the old burger slinger would approve.

Friends of the late Todd Hudson are describing their benefit golf tournament as “No raffle, no auction, no fries — just simple old-fashioned goodness — it’s the Huddy way.”

Hudson died in August 2017 at the age of 53, leaving behind many who remember a big-hearted, fun-loving and humble man of Hudson’s Hamburgers fame.

“He was just such a wonderful member of our community for so long and had so many friends, so we thought we would put this together to honor him and to benefit a few charities,” said Kristin Cooper Herby, event organizer.

Hudson, along with his brother, Steve, was a fifth-generation owner of Hudson’s Hamburgers, a local, historical icon of Coeur d’Alene eateries located downtown on Sherman Avenue. It was opened in 1907 by great-grandfather Harley Hudson, and to this day runs on the merit of simple goodness.

Burger options are single or double, cheese or no cheese, and only pickle and onions for toppings. Don’t even ask about French fries or onion rings.

The 18-hole, best ball tournament takes place on Oct. 7 at The Coeur d’Alene Resort Golf Course, with shotgun start at 11 a.m. Cost is $150 per person and includes golf and a gourmet boxed lunch from The Resort.

“Its was one of Todd’s favorite places to golf so we thought we’d honor him by holding it there,” said Cooper Herby.

For those who don’t golf but still want to join the fun, starting at 7 p.m. Oct. 6, a pre-golf celebration is being held at the Caddy Shack, 1100 W. Prairie Ave. Cost is $25 per person and includes food, two drink tickets and entertainment. Local musician Tom Cooper will give an encore performance of “I want a Huddyburger,” an uplifting original song which was played last year at Todd’s service. T-shirts printed with that same sentiment will be available for purchase.

Proceeds from these events will benefit Stories with Stewie, a local non-profit reading incentive program founded by Cooper Herby.

“The program was designed to encourage the passion of reading in second and third grade students and kind of get them up to their grade level in reading,” she said. “That’s sort of what it started as, and now it’s become more about just kindness and compassion. And that’s why we are benefitting Stories with Stewie with this event, because those are two big things that Todd really was. He was very compassionate and kind with everyone.”

Proceeds will also go toward funding scholarships ‘for young golfers who are high on golf but low on cash.’
