Hip pain: Solutions for relief

| September 26, 2018 1:00 AM

Hip pain is common in all ages and it can begin for a variety of reasons. Below are three of the most common conditions that contribute to hip pain. For many adults, arthritis can cause aching pain as the joint begins to wear down over time. It affects women at a higher rate than men. Hip joint arthritis doesn’t only cause pain in the hip, but causes pain into the thigh and groin area. This often leads to swelling or stiffness in the hip and upper leg, resulting in a loss of range of motion. Another common cause of hip pain is tendinitis, which usually occurs from overuse of muscles in the hip. This typically happens in younger athletic individuals who participate in running, lifting, kicking sports or dance.

Another condition that happens due to overuse or repetitive motion injury is Bursitis. Bursitis is inflammation of the bursae, which are the small sacs of fluid between bones and tissue within the hip. Some common motions that increase the risk of bursitis include running on uneven terrain or using stair climbing exercises regularly. Other factors that contribute to this condition include hip surgery, spine related problems, bone spurs or an anatomical leg length difference.

One condition that is often overlooked is pelvic floor muscle dysfunction, and is seen in women who have recently undergone the strain of childbirth, pregnancy or menopause. Hip pain can be a result of pelvic floor muscle dysfunction. It is recommended that treatment includes physical therapy with a professional who specializes in this condition.

If you are looking for a solution for your hip pain, consider chiropractic care. It is a natural path to aid in your healing and recovery. In our office we offer adjustments to help reduce spinal misalignments that could be the source of your hip pain. We also provide treatment to extremities such as the hip, knee or ankle, that can be contributing to improper motion and altering your body mechanics when walking. The treatment is gentle and focuses on improving mobility and includes exercises to help strengthen the muscles that will help provide better stability of the joint. Sometimes we will suggest lifestyle changes to help aid in your recovery, which can include modifying how you are sitting in your favorite chair or at the computer, or suggesting better body mechanics when lifting objects around the house or at work.
