Chiefs routed in opener

KENNEWICK, Wash. — Riley Woods scored the lone goal of the game for Spokane early in the first period of a 6-1 loss to the Tri-City Americans in the Western Hockey League opener for both teams in front of 4,147 on Saturday at the Toyota Center.

Woods scored 2:20 into the game to give Spokane an early lead. Tri-City scored twice to take a 2-1 lead after the first period.

Nolan Yaremko — who assisted on both Tri-City goals in the first period — scored back-to-back goals in the second period to give the Americans a 4-1 lead after the second.

Spokane travels to face Kootenay on Friday in Cranbrook, British Columbia, at 6 p.m.
