Jeanselme shines for Lake City

| September 22, 2018 12:22 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — Junior Logan Jeanselme caught five touchdown passes — all from sophomore quarterback Chris Irvin — as the Lake City Timberwolves pulled away after halftime to beat the East Valley Knights 55-39 in their homecoming game Friday night.

“They were all pretty long (scoring plays), he just won one-on-one matchups,” said first-year Lake City coach Brian Fulp, who had the “interim” tag removed earlier this week by school officials. “We liked the look that we were getting.”

Zane Lettau and Anthony Chavez each rushed for a touchdown for Lake City (2-3), which has won two straight. Travis Jerome returned an interception for a touchdown, and Cooper Brown blocked a punt out of the end zone in the first half for a safety.

“We did not come out well at all,” said Fulp, whose team led 21-20 at the half. “Stupid mistakes, couple penalties, muffed a punt, really got in our own way. We refocused after that long halftime (for homecoming), and played a lot better.”

Connor Dremann had two interceptions for Lake City, which plays host to Sandpoint next Friday.

East Valley dropped to 0-4.

No individual statistics or scoring plays were available.

ST. MARIES — Trailing 18-6 in the third quarter, the host Lumberjacks scored four straight touchdowns to beat the Tigers in nonleague play.

Kaden Hammond threw for 204 yards and a pair of touchdown passes and ran for one for St. Maries. Caden Hall ran for two scores for the Lumberjacks, who outgained the Tigers 419-288. Eli Gibson ran for 128 yards on 13 carries.

“We had some turnovers early in the game that put us in a tough position, and the kids just battled through it,” St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. “Playing on a shorter field and not turning the ball over was key in the second half.”

Joey Follini ran for two TDs for Timberlake.

Next Friday, Timberlake (3-2) plays host to Lakeland, and St. Maries (4-1) is home vs. Bonners Ferry.

HARRISON FLATS — Three seniors — Gage Maitland, Triston Usdrowski and Marcus Ausman — had big nights as host Kootenai cruised past their North Star League rivals.

Maitland threw an interception on the game’s opening drive, but was unstoppable after that, completing 14-of-20 passes for 313 yards and five TDs. Two of the touchdowns went to Triston Usdrowski, and a 40-yard TD pass went to his younger brother, Jarrett, to open the scoring.

“Gage floated one and it got picked on our opening drive. We held them on defense, then Gage found Jarrett on that deep strike and it got us rolling,” Kootenai coach Doug Napierala said. “Our three main seniors have been playing since they were freshmen, and they keep getting better.”

Lakeside (1-4 overall, 0-2 NSL) responded immediately after Jarrett Usdrowski’s touchdown, as Jayson Hall returned the ensuing kickoff 75 yards to even the score at 6 with about four minutes left in the first quarter.

It was all Warriors after that, with five more Kootenai TDs before halftime, including a 22-yard interception return and 55-yard TD reception by Ausman.

“We had four interceptions on the night; our defense played really strong,” Napierala added.

Kootenai (3-1, 1-1) hosts Timberline for a six-man contest next Friday.
