Richard Herbert Hawkins, 67

Richard Herbert Hawkins, 67, of Hayden, Idaho, passed away on Sept. 3, 2018, at Kootenai Medical Center in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Richard was born on May 23, 1951, in Ohio, the oldest of four sons to Richard and Rita Hawkins. Many of his friends called him “Richie” or “Richie Rich.” The title and relationship he enjoyed most was “Dad” or “Daddy.” He loved his kids!

Richard grew up and attended school in Michigan. He graduated from Michigan State University. After college Rich moved to Southern California. He married Melissa Umbarger in 1993. They moved to North Idaho in 1994, first to Coeur d’Alene and later to Hayden, were they raised five children.

He loved to sing and play guitar. He was part of musical worship groups at numerous churches. He volunteered at the Union Gospel Mission in Spokane, Wash., on Tuesday nights to be part of a worship team for the residents. Recently, Richard was working at Skate Plaza in Coeur d’Alene. He enjoyed the interaction with the young people. He had a great sense of humor and quick wit and attracted many friends. He loved Hawaiian shirts and had a vast collection.

He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Hawkins; mother, Rita Bucchare; and brother, Jeff Hawkins.

Richard is survived by his five children: Brichelle, Siarah, Garrett, Melanne and Gavin Hawkins; and daughter-in-law, Chelsea Hawkins; baby granddaughter, Mya Hawkins; brothers, Larry and Doug Hawkins of Michigan and cousins, nieces and nephews and many friends. He is deeply missed, but we know he is now with the Lord and we will be reunited someday.

A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 25, 2018, at Candlelight Christian Fellowship, 5725 N. Pioneer Dr., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83815. His children and family will be showing tribute by wearing Hawaiian shirts. Everyone is welcome to do the same.
