Lake City fends off Coeur d'Alene

COEUR d’ALENE — In front of a loud crowd in the gym of their city rival, the visiting Lake City Timberwolves had to rally in the third set to finish off the Coeur d’Alene Vikings in 5A Inland Empire League volleyball play Tuesday night.
Scores were 25-21, 25-20, 26-24.
Ashley Kaufman had 10 kills as Lake City (6-0, 3-0 5A IEL), which trailed 22-17 in the third set. Klaire Mitchell had 13 assists, Nellie Reese 12 assists and four aces, Reilley Chapman 10 digs, Brenna Hawkins three blocks.
“Coeur d’Alene did a nice job being ready to play us,” Lake City coach Mike Summers said. “I think we struggled a little bit in serve-receive; it took us out of our offensive set. In the third set we were down, and came back point by point. I think that was a good little test of character, that we can do it when need be.”
Kelly Horning had 17 kills, three blocks and three aces, Maggie Bloom seven digs, Taylin Rowley seven digs and Lauren Phillips 20 assists for Coeur d’Alene (8-4, 1-1 5A IEL), which travels to Lewiston next Tuesday.
“It was a hard fought match,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “Both teams showed a lot of grit and had some spectacular kills. The crowd seemed pretty loud and the atmosphere inside the gym was exciting. We’re gaining some momentum, and are building to compete for a district title.”
Lake City travels to Yakima on Saturday for the Sundome Festival.

MOSCOW — Tessa Sarff had 18 kills and Ali Carpenter had 19 digs and four aces, leading the Trojans to a 25-9, 22-25, 25-16, 25-20 nonleague win against the Bears at Bear Den.
“We came out to a fast start and were really rolling in the first set,” Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said. “Moscow kind of got warmed up a little in the second set, but our defense was stellar tonight. Ali’s digs and aces really helped us out tonight.”
Kayla Mayo had 26 assists for Post Falls (5-3), which hosts Lewiston on Thursday at The Arena.

Cd’A Charter
COEUR d’ALENE — Kenzie Dean totaled nine kills and 16 digs as the visiting Tigers beat the Panthers 25-12, 25-19, 25-20 in the Intermountain League opener for both teams at Holy Family Catholic School.
McKeeley Tonkin had 19 assists, seven digs and four kills for Timberlake (10-4). Kylie Marneris had 14 digs, Ashlyn Mallet 12 kills, Brooke Jessen seven kills and three blocks.
“We lost, but I’m not geeling too bad about it,” said Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Cynthia Beyer, an assistant at Timberlake for a number of years before taking the job at Charter last year. “We made ’em work. It was a fun match; it was fun watching the Timberlake kids, because I know them so well. It was fun to see my kids step up; they got their hands on a lot of balls.”
Megan MacKinney had five kills and eight digs for Coeur d’Alene Charter (5-2). Madi Kociela had five kills, Hannah Burt 12 digs.
On Thursday, Timberlake travels to Priest River, and Coeur d’Alene Charter plays host to Kellogg at Holy Family.

Lakeside
PLUMMER — Josie Scribner had 15 kills and four blocks for the Jaguars in a 25-23, 22-25, 19-25, 26-24, 15-11 win over the Knights in the North Star League opener for both teams at Ron Miller Court.
“It was a game of momentum, and whoever had it, that’s kind of where it went,” Lakeside coach Brad Veile said. “Genesis Prep had some height, and Josie was hitting a strong middle and hitting the ball well. We just had a hard time getting the ball up.”
Rachel Schroeder had 10 digs and two aces, Emily Martinez 18 assists and four blocks and Jayci Blood 10 digs for Genesis Prep (1-1), which hosts Wallace on Saturday at Post Falls Middle School.
Glory Olson had 12 kills and five aces, Alyssa SiJohn 28 assists for Lakeside (1-2), which hosts Clark Fork on Thursday.

N.I. Christian
COCOLALLA — The Royals won the second set, but couldn’t pull out the next two in a Mountain Christian League match at Cocolalla Lake Bible Camp, falling to the Kootenai Thunder 25-20, 17-25, 25-18, 25-22.
Delaney LePard had six aces for North Idaho Christian (1-2, 1-1 MCL) and Hailey LePard had eight assists. Julia Haag tallied eight kills and Gabi Cavanaugh had eight digs.
The Royals travel to Pasco, Wash., to face Country Christian School at noon Saturday.
