Daryl T. McCarthy

Daryl T. McCarthy, beloved son, brother, father and uncle, was born Jan. 4, 1962, at Garden Park Hospital in Anaheim, Calif. Daryl passed on Aug. 21, 2018, in Spokane, Wash., as a result of a bicycle/vehicle accident. Daryl was the youngest of five children born to Chuck and Shirley McCarthy.

Daryl was preceded in death by his father, Chuck, and his uncle Warren, who passed at age 91 — just two days after Daryl.

Daryl and his family lived in Buena Park, Calif., until 1968, when they moved to North Idaho. During the six years he lived in Buena Park, the McCarthy family enjoyed spending long vacations each summer, boating and camping. Their favorite vacation spot was Clearlake, Calif., where very fond memories were forged.

After moving to North Idaho, Daryl spent many a day with his mom and dad at their business, “L’il Bear Drive-in” in Hayden, Idaho. He especially enjoyed eating hot dogs fresh off the grill. When Daryl was 12 years old he started helping his sister, Trudy, and his brother-in-law, Bill, with their race horses by doing chores at the Coeur d’Alene and Spokane horse racing tracks. He enjoyed being around the horses and helping out wherever they needed him.

During his younger years, Daryl played Little League baseball with his cousin, Merlin (“Ricky”) Davis. In later years, Daryl and Ricky enjoyed bowling together. Daryl also enjoyed playing golf and he was a pretty good golfer.

When Daryl was 16 years old he was hit by an automobile while riding his motorcycle. He suffered head trauma and was in a coma for 3½ days. His brother David was in the military at the time on a ship in the Mediterranean. He was given leave to fly home to be with Daryl and the rest of his family. He arrived on day 3½ and as he walked into the hospital room, Daryl had literally just awakened from his coma and said, “Hello Dave.” It was music to everyone’s ears in the room at the time. Daryl went through a very long and extensive rehabilitation from this traumatic accident and it would change his life thereafter, taking a toll on his decision making, job opportunities and everyday life experiences.

However, there was some light that would shine through those difficult times when his son, Gabriel, and his daughter, Moriah, were born. The children now live with their adoptive family.

Daryl loved them more than life itself. Through all of Daryl’s struggles, he had recently reached a plateau where his life was truly starting to improve, allowing him to experience more clarity and balance. His mom and dad never, ever gave up on Daryl during his struggling times. They always loved him unconditionally.

Daryl, you have enriched our lives by allowing us to see the importance of being non-judgmental and having a heart full of love and forgiveness. Thank you. May you, Dad and Uncle Warren be enjoying the infinite possibilities in Heaven! Love, your family.
