Lake City girls blank Lewiston

LEWISTON — Lily Tweedy had a goal and an assist, and Eryn Ducote added two assists as the Lake City Timberwolves opened 5A Inland Empire League girls soccer play with a 5-0 victory over the Lewiston Bengals on Monday at Walker Field.

“I thought we started off real quick, then we let up a little bit, but we finished strong — all those things you experience when you play on a Monday,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “But we worked hard, good team win, and we got our job done.”

Lake City (5-1) plays host to Mead on Wednesday.

SPOKANE — The Tigers won on the fourth shooter in sudden death to beat the Vikings in a match moved from Hart Field to under the lights at Albi Stadium.

Erika Skindlov’s penalty kick in the 60th minute tied the game at 1 for Coeur d’Alene (2-3).

The teams then eschewed overtime — which is normally played in regular-season games in Washington, but not in Idaho — and went straight to penalty kicks.

It was 3-3 after the first five shooters for each team. Coeur d’Alene then made three in a row in sudden death before missing the fourth, and LC made its fourth to win the game.

“I’m not disappointed at all; I thought our girls played really well,” Coeur d’Alene coach Andy Vredenburg said. “We had a lot of opportunities, and we start putting those opportunities away and we’ll start winning these games.

“It’s the first time we’ve played on turf this year; the game is much faster, and the girls adjusted well. The girls play a lot better when the pace is faster.”

Coeur d’Alene travels to Post Falls today at 4:30 for its 5A Inland Empire League opener.

COEUR d’ALENE — Greyden Lee and Keaton Murphree each had two goals and an assist as the host Timberwolves rolled past the Bengals in their 5A Inland Empire League opener at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

“We were able to maintain a solid amount of possession in the midfield and defended well against the Lewiston counter-attack down the wings as well as through the middle in our defensive third,” Lake City coach Alan Rich said. “We attacked well and were able to spread the scoring over several players on both the run of play and set pieces. I’m pleased with the result today and the way the team is coming together as we head into the main part of our season.”

Lake City (5-0) travels to Sandpoint on Thursday.

SPOKANE — Ashley Kaufman had 12 kills and the visiting Timberwolves rode a strong start to a 25-16, 25-19, 25-15 victory over the Panthers in nonleague play.

Klaire Mitchell had 16 assists and 12 digs for Lake City (5-0). Nellie Reese had 11 assists, Reilley Chapman 11 digs, Tanai Jenkins four blocks, Janae Rayborn three aces.

“I thought we had a better start; in previous games we’d been sluggish at the start,” Lake City coach Mike Summers said. “Klaire made some really good setting choices, and made some nice plays on defense. Our middles tonight, Tanai and Brenna Hawkins, controlled the net with their block.”

Lake City plays at Coeur d’Alene tonight at 7.
