Lake City sweeps Post Falls
POST FALLS — Freshman Nellie Reese started the season as a “floater,” but has worked her way into the varsity lineup as a setter in Lake City’s 6-2 offense.
Reese had 11 assists and two aces as the Timberwolves swept the Post Falls Trojans 25-20, 25-17, 25-10 in 5A Inland Empire League play Thursday night at The Arena.
“Nellie just allows us to run that 6-2 offense that we were eager and chomping at the bit to run,” Lake City coach Mike Summers said. “We’re a more balanced team when we can run that 6-2. She has stepped into that role and has done a fantastic job.”
Klaire Mitchell, the “other” setter in the 6-2 offense, had 12 assists for the Timberwolves (4-0, 2-0 5A IEL). After being the lone setter in a 5-1 offense in previous years, Mitchell now splits her time between setting and hitting. On Thursday night, she had team highs of nine kills and 15 digs, and also had two blocks and two aces.
Janae Rayborn added seven kills and two aces, Tanai Jenkins three blocks for Lake City.
Tessa Sarff had nine kills, Courtney Finney 11 assists, Kayla Mayo nine assists and two aces and Ali Carpenter seven digs for Post Falls (4-3, 1-1), which travels to Moscow on Tuesday.
“I thought we played really solid,” Post Falls coach Matt Barkley said. “They’re a very talented team, but we hung with them for the entire match. Lake City’s a tough team with some great senior leadership.”
Lake City travels to Mead on Monday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Kelly Horning had 17 kills, 15 digs and three blocks, and the host Vikings rallied to win the final two sets to beat the Panthers 25-16, 16-25, 16-25, 25-21, 15-7 in nonleague play at Viking Court.
Taylin Rowley had seven kills and 11 assists for Coeur d’Alene (4-2). Lauren Phillips had 21 assists, Maggie Bloom nine digs, Olivia Haakenson four aces.
“Mead is just a real scrappy team,” Coeur d’Alene coach Carly Curtis said. “I feel like we did a good job making adjustments and increasing our level of play. I thought we did a good job adjusting our offense to break up their defense. We played at a very high level against a very good team.”
Outside hitter Katherine McEuen had 17 kills, 20 digs, three blocks and three aces for Mead. Allie Flynn had 36 assists, Gracie Chimienti 15 digs.
Coeur d’Alene plays in the Lakeland Invitational on Saturday.

MOSCOW — Katy Ryan had 17 kills, Daphne Carroll 13 as the visiting Hawks opened 4A Inland Empire League play with a 26-24, 25-15, 25-17 victory over the Bears at Bear Den.
Jenny Wirtz had four aces and four blocks for Lakeland. Abbey Neff had 31 assists, Olivia Cooper 14 digs, Summer Powell nine digs.
“We are proud of how our girls played tonight against Moscow,” Lakeland coach Kelsie Badger said. “They keep improving each match and are a joy to coach. They are starting to come together and we are excited to see the level we can reach.”
Lakeland hosts its Lakeland Invitational on Saturday.

OROFINO — The host Maniacs won the deciding game to beat the Lumberjacks 16-25, 25-20, 27-25, 16-25, 15-6 in the Central Idaho League opener for both schools.
Dakotah Wilks had six aces, 24 assists and three blocks for St. Maries (5-5). Kaci Haeg and Elizabeth Ragan had 10 kills each for the Lumberjacks, and Allie Brebner had 12 digs.
St. Maries is scheduled to compete at the Lakeland Invitational on Saturday.
