Three more IEL/GSL matchups this week

Last week three 5A Inland Empire League teams squared off against 4A Greater Spokane League teams, with the GSL going 2-1.

Coeur d’Alene beat Gonzaga Prep, but Lake City lost to Lewis and Clark, and Post Falls fell to Mead.

This week features three more IEL/GSL matchups, led by Coeur d’Alene facing Mead at Eastern Washington University’s Roos Field in Cheney.

As for the picks, Jason Elliott and I both went 4-3 on high school games, each missing on Post Falls beating Mead, Timberlake beating Freeman and Clark Fork beating Kootenai.

We both went 4-0 on the first week of college picks — but then, three of the games were gimmies. The only one that was sort of a tossup was Washington State beating Wyoming. Sort of.

For the season, Jason is 10-4 on high school picks, I am 9-5.

HIGH SCHOOL

All games at 7 p.m. unless noted

Coeur d’Alene (2-0) vs. Mead (1-0), 6 p.m. at Roos Field, Cheney

NELKE: Coeur d’Alene is undefeated despite eight turnovers in its first two games, and two other miscues trying to punt. Mead feasted on turnovers in winning at Post Falls last week. The Vikings might not be able to get away with such sloppiness vs. the Panthers; but then, they might get things cleaned up this week.

Coeur d’Alene, 44-32

ELLIOTT: This one has all the makings of a shootout on the red turf in Cheney. In that case ...

Coeur d’Alene, 48-38

Ferris (1-0) at Lake City (0-2)

NELKE: Ferris opened last week with a 17-7 victory over Moses Lake, perennially a pretty good program, last week at Joe Albi Stadium in Spokane. Lake City is playing at home for the third straight week, having been outscored 73-20 in its first two games. The Timberwolves have to break through sometime, don’t they?

Lake City, 20-14

ELLIOTT: Maybe next week Timberwolves fans.

Ferris, 24-14

University (1-0) at Post Falls (1-1)

NELKE: The Titans romped 52-7 last week at Sandpoint, a team Post Falls handled 34-7 in the season opener. If the Trojans can avoid throwing four interceptions — two returned for touchdowns — in the first quarter this week ...

Post Falls, 34-28

ELLIOTT: Post Falls ran the ball really well last week. Avoiding the turnovers might be just enough to get it done.

Post Falls, 28-24

East Valley at Lakeland (1-0)

NELKE: East Valley lost 21-6 at home to Deer Park last week. Lakeland is playing on a short week after beating Rogers last Saturday at Albi.

Lakeland, 21-13

ELLIOTT: Lakeland gears up for its visit from Lake City with a good test this week.

Lakeland, 24-17

Timberlake (1-1) at Moscow (0-2)

NELKE: Timberlake was very bad in Week 1 (a 53-0 loss at Frenchtown) and very good in Week 2 (a 41-27 win over Freeman). 4A Moscow lost big (36-12) to 2A Grangeville, then lost 50-27 last week to Clarkston. A win by 3A Timberlake would be very telling — for both teams.

Timberlake, 28-24

ELLIOTT: Timberlake put up over 400 yards on the ground last week at home. If they can take that kind of effort on the road ...

Timberlake, 38-28

St. Maries (2-0) at Deer Park (1-0)

NELKE: St. Maries has been impressive so far — and so has its new turnover chain.

St. Maries, 28-22

ELLIOTT: First chainsaws in the introductions, and chains for turnovers. Up next ...

St. Maries, 34-14

Lakeside (0-2) at Clark Fork (1-1, 1-0 North Star League)

NELKE: The Wampus Cats surprised some (well, at least us, anyway), by routing Kootenai in Harrison Flats this week. Lakeside hopes to challenge the Cats and Kootenai for the league title. Clark Fork can take command of the league race with a win.

Clark Fork, 38-28

ELLIOTT: I’m sure that picking against Clark Fork last week was on the bulletin board for the Wampus Cats last week at Kootenai. Here’s some more.

Lakeside, 44-36

COLLEGE

San Jose State (0-1) at Washington State (1-0)

Saturday, 8 p.m.

NELKE: Do we need to wait until 8 p.m. for this? Apparently so, so the Pac-12 Networks can show it live — at least to those who get that channel.

WSU, 56-14

ELLIOTT: Play fast guys ... we’ll be counting on that come Saturday.

WSU, 49-10

Western New Mexico (0-1) at Idaho (0-1)

NELKE: The Vandals won’t do to the Division II Mustangs what Fresno State did to the Vandals last week (79-13), but it will be enough to ease some of the pain.

Idaho, 46-14

ELLIOTT: Something for the Pain was a hit song by Bon Jovi in the mid-90s. The Vandals get a little bit of that this weekend.

Idaho, 38-17

UConn (0-1) at Boise State (1-0)

Saturday, 7:15 p.m.

NELKE: The Huskies lost 56-17 to Central Florida last week. If Jim Calhoun shows up to coach UConn this week, the Broncos could be in trouble. Otherwise ...

BSU, 56-17

ELLIOTT: Good teams don’t lose at home. Boise State is pretty good this year.

BSU, 48-20

Eastern Washington (1-0) at Northern Arizona (1-0)

Saturday, 4 p.m.

NELKE: This should be a heckuva Big Sky game — except it doesn’t count in the conference standings. Still, it features quite the quarterback showdown between EWU’s Gage Gubrud and NAU’s Case Cookus.

EWU, 47-44

ELLIOTT: Northern Arizona beat UTEP in El Paso last weekend to open the season. This week ...

Northern Arizona, 38-35
