Want to improve your flexibility? Learn how
As adults, we tend to lose a lot of our natural flexibility as the years pass by. Although it’s annoying, it’s a natural part of the aging process. We get a little stiff, notice a little pain and it becomes a little more difficult to move from time to time. In order to help reduce the frequency of these symptoms, it is important to maintain flexibility. Below are tips for maintaining or increasing your range of motion as you age and protecting your quality of life for years to come.
Daily stretching routine
Stretching helps keep your muscles loose, joints flexible and reduces tension in the ligaments and tendons. The reason this is important is to help improve mobility and reduce stiffness, aches and pains. A stretching routine does not require a great deal of time and should be easy to incorporate into your daily schedule. As soon as you get out of bed, do a quick 5-minute stretching routine. When you are at work, take a walk on your break and stretch for 2-3 minutes. Each night before you go to bed, sit at the edge of your bed and do range of motion exercises for your neck and low back. You will notice gradual changes in flexibility over time but only if you are consistent with your daily stretching routine.
Weekly exercise
Along with a stretching routine, it is equally important to exercise 3-4 times a week. This will help maintain strength, balance and increase circulation, which can decrease with inactivity and age. Exercise should be something you enjoy and can include walking, running, swimming, biking, Tai Chi, yoga, barre, Pilates, etc. This will also make a world of difference in your mobility.
Many people find another great way to keep their range of motion is to get regular chiropractic care. A chiropractor focuses on postural imbalances and adjusts the spine to help to reduce irritation to the nervous system so that the entire body can benefit. Our patients report many benefits including a reduction in pain, increased flexibility, improved sleep, improved mood, improved posture, stress relief and many other health benefits.
