First day of school photos run the gamut
Here’s a group Good Sport Award to the hundreds of kids, from kindergartners to seniors in high school, who let their parents take first day of school photos on Tuesday to post on Facebook. A longtime empty nester, I thoroughly enjoyed seeing so many smiling faces.
The best back-to-school photo of the day goes to Officer Cody Duce of the Post Falls Police Department. Officer Duce is the department’s newest employee and is assigned as School Resource Officer for the middle schools.
His photo for the first day of middle school shows him on his front porch, in uniform with a lunch sack and a chalkboard sign that gives his age as 35 years old, his height of 68 inches, favorite food — tacos — and his goal to be a police officer when he grows up.
Well played, Officer Duce!

The Tuesday following Labor Day Weekend is probably one of my least favorite days of the year. Even though the calendar says that the last day of summer isn’t for three weeks, it’s all over but the shouting for all intents and purposes.
Many people here in our corner of the world took advantage of the long weekend and nice weather to camp in the great outddors or frolick on any of our much less crowded lakes and rivers. The tourists have gone home to their lives lived in places not quite as extraordinary as here.
Tradition — or at least generations of people who summer in the Hamptons — tells us that it’s a fashion faux paus to wear white after Labor Day. Pshaw. If I owned a pair of white shoes that weren’t athletic shoes I’d sashay about town showing them off. If I wore white pants ever, I’d wear them in September for sure.
I can’t turn back the clock on summer, but we can have a little fun by rockin’ the white until it is fashionably acceptable to take the winter white out of the closet.

All summer long, Captain Carl Fus of Lake Coeur d’Alene Cruises has overseen the boats, taking thousands of tourists out on the water. On Labor Day he had a little time to relax. He did that by getting up early and volunteering to cook scrambled eggs for the Rathdrum Lions Club’s annual Labor Day breakfast.

Tuesday, Sept. 11 marks the 17th anniversary of the horrific and historic day that most of us can never forget. For the families of all who perished in the attacks, for all of those who have since, and for those who continue to serve in harm’s way in the military battling terrorism, the world has changed irrevocably. Take a moment to remember and honor the heroes and the fallen.
