Fired-up Sandpoint knocks off Vikings in four
SANDPOINT — Kelly Horning had 12 kills for Coeur d’Alene, but Sandpoint, fired up for the first home match since the return of former head coach Jeff Hurst, knocked off the Vikings 25-22, 25-17, 22-25, 25-18 in nonleague play Tuesday night at Les Rogers Court.
Elli Schraeder added four aces and three blocks for Coeur d’Alene (3-2), Taylin Rowley had 23 assists, Maggie Bloom 11 digs.
“We’re just struggling on serve-receive, and it’s a key to what our success is offensively,” said Vikings head coach Carly Curtis, lauding the defense of Olivia Haakenson in defeat. “Olivia came in and did a really good job in the back row for us.”
Grace Hicks, Jenny Slaveck and Jazmin Stockton led the hit parade for Sandpoint (5-4).
“First of all, the kids played with a bunch of physical ferocity that overwhelmed Coeur d’Alene,” said Hurst, who coached Sandpoint to four state titles from 1993-2001. “They had no idea what was hitting them. Our serving is ridiculous. Our service attack completely neutralized their two huge hitters, Schraeder and Horning. They didn’t sting us.”
Coeur d’Alene plays host to Mead on Thursday.
