Former North Idaho College President Joe Dunlap, who currently serves on the NIC Board of Trustees, announced he will run as a candidate for Trustee Zone 4.

Dunlap was appointed to his current trustee position by the NIC Board of Trustees in January after longtime trustee Judy Meyer stepped down. If elected to the Zone 4 position, Dunlap would serve a two-year term until November 2020.

“North Idaho College is a special place with passionate, talented people working there,” Dunlap said. “I want to continue to serve the college and community as best I can in the role of trustee.”

As president of NIC, Dunlap oversaw the establishment of 17 new technical education programs and led the college in efforts to build the Parker Technical Education Center, the Student Wellness and Recreation Center, and the North Idaho Collaborative Education Facility, which broke ground this year. No taxes were raised to fund of any of these construction projects.

Dunlap retired as NIC president in 2016 after serving four years. He was president of Spokane Community College for five years before accepting the position at NIC.

Dunlap has served in a variety of academic positions including faculty member, department chair, dean and vice president of learning at several institutions.

Dunlap served 20 years in the U.S. Army, retiring as lieutenant colonel in 1992. He earned his doctorate in education from Oregon State University, an MBA from City University, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Whitworth University.

“I am committed to lifelong learning and student success,” Dunlap said.
