CARCASSES: A disposal problem

The other morning returning from my walk there was a dead fawn at the intersection of 15th Street and Shadduck Lane that appeared to have been hit by a vehicle. It was stiff but not bloated. I called the Idaho Department of Fish and Game and asked them about picking up the deer. I was informed that the IDFG did not have the personnel to dispose of dead game. I was given the options of disposing the body in a woods or hauling same to the transfer station.

As most of the deer in Kootenai County reside in Coeur d’Alene and Dalton Gardens, it would seem appropriate that the cities would take responsibility for these critter kills. Perhaps, if the cities don’t have the personnel, the job could be contracted, paying on a per disposal basis. Maybe this could be done by volunteers in these cities.

In simplest terms, we need a number to call when a dead critter is found that will ensure a quick pickup and disposal.
