WORLEY — Winter is a time the Coeur d'Alene Tribe likes to invite the public to observe its members honoring their roots.

The annual Winter Blessing, a free night of traditional tribal storytelling and dance exhibitions, will take place Thursday at the Coeur d'Alene Casino from 6 to 7:30 p.m..

"This event is held to share and celebrate a new season that has traditionally been a quiet time," said Laura Stensgar, the casino's spokeswoman. "It is a time to reflect on the past year and prepare for the new year in a good way. It is when families would gather and share meals and stories that were meaningful and entertaining.

"We, as Coeur d'Alene tribal people, understand that it’s important to share and educate others of our rich, beautiful and significant culture."

Stensgar said the holidays have become commercial, so the Winter Blessing offers residents a chance to enrich this season with a better understanding of the tribal culture.

"It is also an opportunity to take the time to reflect on all that we have with friends, family and beautiful surroundings," she said.

There will also be a guest performance by hula dancers, a description of Winter Blessing and free fry bread with huckleberry jam.

In the spirit of giving, the Tribe will donate $20,000 to families in need and organizations this winter. Twenty families will be chosen to each receive $500. Ten charities will receive a donation of $1,000.

Family nominations are accepted from Thursday to Dec. 9 and charity nominations from Dec. 10 to Dec. 19 at: http://www.937themountain.com/
