THANKS: A veteran's salute

| November 21, 2018 12:00 AM

Recently my wife and I were grocery shopping in Hayden and I was provided one of the best days of my life.

At the checkout counter, the clerk informed us a young man was paying for our groceries and requested to not be identified. His thanks and appreciation for my service to my country. Albertsons also provided a discount and the clerk, who was in tears, said “Thank You For Your Service,” giving me a big hug! An awesome feeling!

We are from a small rural town in northern New Hampshire that has a great deal of pride, respect and thanks for their military service members. So, we learned at an early age about citizenship, patriotism and appreciation for the veterans. I am a member of a family who had three uncles in the services; one receiving the Purple Heart. I am the oldest of four brothers who willingly and proudly served in the USN. Betty and I are the proud parents of three sons who joined and retired from the USN. There are also several cousins who are veterans. Each and every one receiving Honorable Discharges.

I offer this information to help explain the appreciation and honor the young man extended to us. To us, it says Thank You to my family and all veterans. Simply put: “You made our day.” I also extend THANKS to all my fellow veterans.
