Ted ‘Dutch’ Vogt, 71
Ted “Dutch” Vogt died Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2018, while surrounded by loved ones at Hospice House of North Idaho in Coeur d’Alene.
Born May 30, 1947, in Germany, Dutch was a young child in the wake of destruction which led to his family’s immigration to the United States. He was raised in New Jersey near the shore and graduated from Middletown High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1966. He served until 1969, when he was seriously and permanently injured while protecting two boys from being harmed by a live fuse they had found on a beach north of Danang. He took the explosives to protect the boys, but while disarming them, they blew up in his hands.
Dutch moved to North Idaho in the 1980s to breed Malamutes, five years after becoming a friend of Bill W.
A compassionate listener for decades in the program, Dutch counseled, parented and mentored endless souls for decades in the Pacific Northwest.
Dutch’s heart was in North Idaho, but he never lost the sass and pizzazz that came with being the Jersey boy he was.
He was a generous soul with a fondness for the worst old movies and pretty much any hot dog that ever came around.
Dutch was a man of great faith.
He loved dogs and children, fishing and the water. His love of the water was so great that one of his final wishes was to remain there, so his ashes will be spread accordingly.
There will be no replacement for such a soul.
He is survived by his daughter, Suzanne Vogt; stepchildren: Greg Stoddard, David Walker, Crystal Schwerin and Laura Ingman; his grandchildren who knew him as “Grampy:” Delaney, Calvin and Malia Grace; and the love of his life, Carol Branson.
He passed following a long battle with kidney failure.
Hospice of North Idaho was impeccable in their care of Dutch. He was clear-headed and full of spirit until the end. The family is glad he finally found his rest.
It was Dutch’s request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the House of Faith — Dutch Fund, 1103 N. Third St., Coeur d’Alene, ID 83814.
Services will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 24, 2018, at House of Faith Church.
Come as you are and connect with others in the joy of a life well-lived.
