WSU linebacker Woods earns Pac-12 honors
Washington State linebacker Jahad Woods was named the Pac-12 Conference Defensive Player of the Week, the conference office announced Monday.
In Saturday’s 69-28 win over visiting Arizona, Woods made a career-high 11 tackles, his first career double-digit tackle game, forced one fumble and recovered another. The redshirt sophomore from San Diego also assisted on a tackle-for-loss for the Cougars, who forced four turnovers, tallied eight tackles-for-loss including four sacks, and held the Wildcats to 3.4 yards-per-carry.
Woods earns his second career Pac-12 Defensive Player of the Week, after earning his first last season following the win over No. 5 USC.
This was WSU’s first Pac-12 defensive weekly accolade this season, with Woods the third Cougar to earn conference honors. Quarterback Gardner Minshew II and kick returner Travell Harris earned offensive and special teams player of the week awards, respectively, following the Sept. 15 home win over Eastern Washington.
Also honored by the league were UCLA running back Joshua Kelley, who ran for 289 yards and two TDs on 40 carries to lead the Bruins past their rivals USC, 34-27; and Utah kicker Matt Gay, who broke the Utes’ school record for consecutive field goals with makes of 51, 33 and 31 yards, giving him 21 in a row. Overall, he scored 12 points in Utah’s 30-7 win at Colorado.
EWU’s Barriere honord by Big Sky Conference
Eastern Washington QB Eric Barriere contributed six TDs as the Eagles clinched a share of the Big Sky title on Friday, winning 74-23 at Portland State. The performance earned the Eagles sophomore Big Sky Conference Offensive Player of the Week honors.
Barriere had 216 yards through the air on 15-of-27 passing with five touchdowns and an efficiency rating of 176.5. He also rushed for a career-high 99 yards, including a 66-yard TD on the third offensive play of the game.
UC Davis quarterback Jake Maier shared honors with Barriere, as he completed 37 of 46 passes for a career-high 478 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in the Aggies’ 56-13 victory over Sacramento State. Maier also ran for 2 TDs as UC Davis also clinched a tie for the Big Sky title.
