Coeur d’Alene Symphony and Maestro Jan Pellant will ring in the holiday season with Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony, followed by seasonal favorites that will set the stage for a festive month.

Performances will be Friday, Nov. 30 at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday, Dec. 1 at 2 p.m. at the Kroc Center Performing Arts Theater, 1765 W. Golf Course Road, Coeur d’Alene.

Sibelius’ Fifth Symphony was written by Finland’s most famous composer to commemorate his own 50th birthday, which had been declared a national holiday.

The finalized version premiered in November 1919, almost exactly 100 years ago.

“While this symphony is not as familiar as his Second Symphony, it is a wonderful piece of music, and the glorious horn calls in the third movement (rumoured to be inspired by swan flight) will make any heart swoon,” said a news release.

The Coeur d’Alene Symphony will be joined by Chorale Coeur d’Alene for selections from Handel’s Messiah featuring soloists Rachel Jordan, soprano; and Charles Sorensson, tenor.

Jordan has loved singing since she was a child, and has sung all her life with her family in church, community choirs, and small ensembles. She holds a Bachelors in Music from Thomas Edison State College. Jordan is a member of Chorale Coeur d’Alene and professional hair and makeup artist, and she and her husband have an infant daughter, Emily.

Sorensson, with his silvery lyric tenor voice, continues to be active as an in demand soloist in our region. He studied most recently here locally with Aaron St. Clair Nicholson, and possesses a wide repertoire from opera, oratorio, and musical comedy. Charles is a valued singer and member of Chorale Coeur d’Alene.

Dr. Stan McDaniel is the artistic director of the Chorale and will be conducting “Carol of the Bells” by M. Leontovitch (unaccompanied). Other pieces on the program include selections from Grieg’s “Holberg Suite,” Martin’s “Dance Into the Light,” Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride” and John Rutter’s “We Wish You a Merry Christmas.” We are very excited to collaborate with this fine vocal ensemble!

The symphony will also feature its “Golden Baton” winner, Suzie Rattelle, whose generous contribution won her the opportunity to conduct a short piece at this concert.
