Donna Young, 90

Our dear friend, Donna Young, age 90, passed away on Oct. 25, 2018, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, due to natural causes.

Donna was born in Moorhead, Minn., and moved to North Dakota as a young girl. Following her mother and step-father, Donna moved to Coeur d’Alene in her early teens, arriving by train. She graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School and attended North Idaho College for two years, then continued her education and received her teaching certificate.

Donna married Coeur d’Alene native Roger Young in the late 1940s. For a number of years, Donna taught math in the Post Falls School District. On weekends, she and Roger volunteered at a small local ski hill on Signal Point, running the concession stand. Skiing and ice skating were the highlights of her winters. During this time, Donna honored her artistic skills and engaged in oil painting, sewing and painting on wood. Her woodwork painting often depicted a wide variety of colorful animals and designs from her Norwegian heritage.

Donna’s love for animals resulted in working with the local Audubon organization. She could often be found at her home nursing injured birds back to flight. She and Roger enjoyed several trips to Africa in search of viewing exotic animals natural to that continent. Donna was never without a beloved canine companion. She was an avid jigsaw puzzler, card player and crossword enthusiast. Donna also enjoyed the water and swimming, especially in Lake Coeur d’Alene. She was always the first to take a dip in the spring and last to brave the chilly water in the fall.

Donna is preceded in death by her husband, Roger, of more than 50 years. She is survived by several nephews, nieces and many friends.
