Timberlake tops Lakeland in opener

SPIRIT LAKE — It came down to execution in the second half, and Timberlake did exactly that on the defensive end.

McKeeley Tonkin and Tayrn Soumas scored 21 points each for the 3A Tigers in a 59-26 nonleague win over the 4A Lakeland Hawks in the season opener for both schools Tuesday at Timberlake High.

“We looked a lot different on the defensive end in the second half,” said Timberlake coach Matt Miller, whose team led 28-23 at the half before outscoring the Hawks 31-3 in the second half. “They did a good job of getting the ball into (Katy) Ryan (who scored all 11 of her points) in the first half. We played the same way in the second half, but executed a little better defensively and did a better job rebounding in the second half and were able to get out on the fast break.”

Timberlake is coming off a third-place finish at state last season.

Brooke Jessen added 10 points for Timberlake, which hosts Post Falls on Thursday.

Taylor Elpers scored 12 points for Lakeland, which visits St. Maries next Tuesday.

MOSCOW — Kaci Haeg scored 15 points for St. Maries, but a rough third quarter hurt the Lumberjacks in a nonleague loss to the Bears at Bear Den.

Madison Cordell added 14 points, Alena Davenport 11 for St. Maries (0-2), which travels to Wallace on Thursday.

Hannah Broyles led Moscow (1-1) with 13 points.
