Big third quarter sends Bonners Ferry past St. Maries in season opener
BONNERS FERRY — Sophomore Holly Ansley scored 12 of her game-high 30 points in the third quarter, helping push Bonners Ferry to a 55-42 win over St. Maries in the nonleague opener for both schools on Saturday.
Ansley finished with 10 rebounds, six steals, three assists and five 3-pointers for Bonners Ferry.
“Holly just kind of took over in the third quarter,” Bonners Ferry coach Travis Hinthorn said. “We were kind of in serious foul trouble and just kind of survived.”
Kaci Haeg scored 24 points for St. Maries in the opener for new coach John Cordell, a former assistant coach who also serves as the school’s principal.
“They were fast,” said Hinthorn of St. Maries. “We were struggling to get back on defense and they were much faster than we were early on. We finally just calmed down and started to get in front of them on defense.”
St. Maries travels to Moscow on Tuesday.
Bonners Ferry hosts Wallace on Nov. 29.
