Kariotis, Ballard, Rasmussen, Schoening among local champions

BOISE — Often times, butterflies could cost an athlete at a state tournament.

On Saturday, the butterflies turned out to be a pretty good thing for the boys up north at the state high school swimming championships at the West YMCA.

Lake City High’s Aren Kariotis capped his high school career with a victory in the 5A 100-yard butterfly race, finishing in 49.01 seconds.

“It was a relieving feeling,” said Kariotis, who finished second in the event as a junior. “Going through everything from last year, and all the time and training I’ve put it this year, it’s an awesome feeling.”

Likewise, Sandpoint junior Jacob Ballard won the 100 butterfly in the 4A race, finishing in 52.16.

“I knew that I’d do well in the butterfly, but not that well,” Ballard said. “I really like it. It’s a super cool stroke. I was a little worried because the guy next to me was having good underwater splits, but I was able to pull away from him in the final 50 yards.”

Coeur d’Alene senior Karter Rasmussen won the 5A boys 100 breaststroke in 1:00.88.

Boise swept the team titles in 5A. Century of Pocatello won the boys 4A title, and Idaho Falls claimed the girls title.

This was the first year the Idaho High School Activities Association sponsored the state meet, with the 5A schools competing in one division, and schools in 4A through 1A competing in one division.

Kariotis was also second in the 200 medley relay, 100 backstroke and 400 freestyle.

Ballard was also second in the 100 breaststroke for Sandpoint.

Sandpoint junior Mikayla Schoening picked up a pair of 4A state titles, winning an individual title in the 100 freestyle, as well as the 200 freestyle relay along with fellow Bulldogs Autumn Morgan, Kaya Wright and Kate Bokowy.

The Lake City girls relay team of Toriana Wilson, Sara Kaitz, Hailey Pierce and Julia Pierce set school records in the 200 medley (third, 1:52.10) and 400 freestyle (third, 3:42.19).
