Kimball honored at PNCWA Conference

Jim Kimball received the Individual Distinguished Achievement Award Oct. 23 at the Pacific Northwest Clean Water Association annual conference, in recognition of his 50 years of dedication to maintaining clean water in the Pacific Northwest.

This award is presented to a PNCWA member who is most deserving of special recognition as a result of distinguished service rendered in the interest of pollution abatement, and who has contributed fundamentally and practically to the advancement of the industry.

Kimball graduated from Coeur d’Alene High School in 1963 and from the University of Idaho in 1968, with a master’s degree in civil engineering.

His career began with the Department of Health and Welfare (now called the Department of Environmental Quality) just after graduation. His first major project for the department in 1968 was to follow up on the extensive contamination of the south fork of the Coeur d’Alene River from mining and domestic waste.

After leaving the Department of Health and Welfare, Kimball spent six years with LePard and Frame Engineers before starting his own firm, Kimball Engineering, which eventually merged with J-U-B Engineers.

Throughout his consulting career, Kimball has focused on solving wastewater challenges for communities while keeping rates low, and has helped to implement innovative technologies such as the use of hybrid poplars for the Hayden Area Regional Sewer Board, Sno-fluent at Schweitzer Mountain, and phosphorus treatment using extended air activated sludge.

In addition to his consulting work, Kimball routinely presents at universities, professional conferences, and city events to bring awareness to water health and climate change. He has been a significant contributor to PNCWA through his conference presentations and sponsorship, as well as being the Conference Chair in 2000. He is currently working with the state of Washington to rewrite the Reclaimed Water rules and has significant involvement in toxics rule-making in Idaho.

Though he has retired from J-U-B Engineers, Kimball plans to continue working with quality control of engineering projects as well as researching and presenting on climate change and clean water in the Northwest area.
