GREAT FALLS, Mont. — Izaiah Duran started fast, and held off Jarren Komac for a 12-8 decision at 165 pounds for the Cardinals in a dual with the Argos of the NAIA.

“He got a big move off the bat and caught him off guard,” NIC coach Pat Whitcomb said. “Komac had to fight off his back the entire first period. Duran hit him with a double leg takedown and got a big win.”

Nicholas Hara also had a major decision win for NIC, which fell to Providence in the dual.

“We competed a lot better today, but still have a ways to go,” said Whitcomb, whose team opened with a 37-3 loss at Montana State-Northern on Thursday. “Hopefully we get a little tougher because we’ve got another tough road trip next weekend.”

NIC (0-2) travels to Iowa Central on Thursday.

“It’s going to be a hostile environment,” Whitcomb said. “We used to wrestle them in Powell (Wyo.), but it’s nice to get into their gym and see what they’re made of.”
