Lakes student arrested for threat report
COEUR d'ALENE — A Lakes Middle School female student was arrested Thursday for allegedly making a false report of a school threat earlier in the day.
The student being held at the Juvenile Detention Center is subject to school district discipline and faces criminal charges for making threats on school grounds and false reporting to law enforcement. Both charges are misdemeanors, which hold a maximum punishment of up to a year in jail and a $1,000 fine in each case.
"She made up a story that she had heard a threat," said Coeur d'Alene Police Capt. Dave Hagar.
When Coeur d'Alene Police and school administration investigated the student's report, they quickly determined she had fabricated the story, Hagar said.
The student reported that she heard other people discussing a threat Wednesday night. However, the investigation revealed that was not the case.
There was no threat made against the school.
Police encourage students to immediately report any potential threat or suspicious behavior.
"However, the school district and law enforcement will not tolerate pranks, hoaxes or false reports," a Coeur d'Alene Police press release states. "Those found responsible for such acts will be held accountable."
Hagar said detectives don't believe the Lakes incident is related to the anonymous call to Lake City High earlier this week stating that there was a gunman in the parking lot. While that call drew an all-out response from police and fire agencies, the threat proved unfounded.
