Spokane named host city for

2020 USA Curling national championships

USA Curling’s top event will head to Spokane — Cheney, actually — in 2020, marking the first time the men’s and women’s national championships will take place in the area.

The event will take place Feb, 8-15, 2020, at the Eastern Washington University Recreation Center in Cheney.

The weeklong national event features the top men’s and women’s teams in the country and helps determine Team USA for the subsequent World Championships. The 2020 World Women’s Championship will take place in Canada while the 2020 World Men’s Championship heads to the sport’s home country, Scotland. The 2019 Nationals are taking place in February at Wings Arena in Kalamazoo, Mich.

Former Idaho basketball

coach Trumbo dies

Bill Trumbo, who succeeded the wildly successful Don Monson as men’s basketball coach at the Univerisity of Idaho, has died.

Trumbo died Sunday in Kona, Hawaii. He was 79.

Trumbo took over in Moscow when Monson left for Oregon after coaching the Vandals to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances in 1981 and ’82. But Trumbo was fired after going 27-59 in three seasons at Idaho.

Trumbo later coached the Kenyan national team, then coached at Santa Barbara City College and Cal State Monterey Bay.
