JASON ELLIOTT/Press Lake City’s Grant Clark sprints down the final stretch in front of Post Falls’ Victor Kasner during the 4x200 relay of the 5A Region 1 meet on Thursday at Coeur d’Alene High. Lake City finished second to Lewiston, followed by Post Falls in third.

COEUR d’ALENE — Somewhere over the summer, it clicked for Post Falls High junior Tyler Trengove.

In the high jump.

Long jump.

Triple jump.

You name it, he’s taken quite the leap from last year’s state 5A meet in Boise.

“High jump requires a certain tier of technique than the other events do,” Trengove said. “You’ve got to think a lot more about what you’re going to do.”

At the Pasco Invitational, Trengove lost to Kentridge’s Tyler Cronk, who jumped a 7-3. Trengove matched a personal record with a 6-8, good for second.

“I jumped better with bigger competition,” Trengove said. “Like Pasco, or state, I’ll either get close to a personal record or match it. The kid that won (state) last year graduated, so I think I’ve got a good chance to win it this year.”

“Jumping against Tyler (at Pasco) makes me want to continue to get better,” Trengove said. “Knowing that he’s better than me, it really drives me to get better and try to beat them. So I jumped 6-foot-8 for a second time.”

On Thursday, Trengove won the 5A boys high jump with a height of 6-6, a full foot higher than the second-place finisher. He also won in the long jump (22-0) and triple jump (44-5) during the first day of the 5A Region 1 meet at Coeur d’Alene High.

“Long jump, I’ve never really had a problem with,” Trengove said. “The triple jump, I still haven’t gotten the technique down yet.

Trengove stands 6-foot-4.

“Every person I’ve ever seen in the high jump has been really tall,” Trengove said. “Being lengthy definitely helps.”

Last year at state, Trengove finished sixth in the high jump, seventh in the long jump and 16th in the triple jump.

“After state last year, I think I only jumped 6-2,” Trengove said. “And I was really close to hitting 6-4, but was bummed I didn’t get it by the end of my school season. Spokane Falls started to have some open meets, and that’s when I started to jump 6-4. I went to the Simplot Games (at Holt Arena in Pocatello) and jumped 6-5 over a bungee. Then in the first indoor meet, I went 6-8 3/4, which was a personal record.”

“He’s come so far this year, to a 6-8 in the high jump,” Post Falls coach Wade Quesnell said. “You only get an athlete of his ability once a decade, if you’re lucky. And he’s only a junior. We’re excited to see what he can do at state and next year. He put a lot of time in during the offseason, and he just got confident. And he’s done really well.”

Post Falls’ Melody Kempton won her fourth straight regional title in the high jump with a mark of 5-4.

When it comes to sprinting events, Lakeland senior Jillian Mael has been sneaky consistent in recent years.

Mael finished eighth in both the 100 and 200 in last year’s state 4A meet at Dona Larsen Park in Boise.

“Definitely the 200,” said Mael of which was her favorite event. “It’s a good distance between the 100 and 400. The focus this week is getting good seed times for next week if I can make it.”

Mael, along with teammates Summer Kastning, Sofi Schnepf and Taylor Elpers, won the 4x200 relay in 1 minute, 48.31 seconds.

Mael will compete in the 100, 200 and 400 when the regional meet shifts to Vollmer Bowl in Lewiston today for the remainder of the running events.

“With the 100, basically you get up from your start and it’s over,” Mael said. “I love the corner (in the 200). I feel like I’m a lot stronger in the corner than anywhere else. It’s not a death distance, but it’s close enough where it’s not over right away.”

Mael is undecided on her future plans, but should running at college be in those plans, she’ll likely attend Spokane Falls Community College and compete for Community Colleges of Spokane.

“I train with their head sprint coach Mick Wallace each summer,” Mael said. “I’ve got a really good relationship with him. He’s made me a stronger runner and my form has been better.”

“She’s been consistent since her freshman year and has just continued to get better and better,” Lakeland coach Lee Libera said. “Especially her individual events. The last couple of years, she’s concentrated on the individual stuff, and this year is back to helping us a little bit in the relays. She’s had a good career, especially in our region in the sprints.”

Mael holds the fastest time in the area in all classifications in the 200, clocking in a 26.18.

“She really runs a good 200,” Libera said. “For a long time, she’d been running the 100, 200 and 400 in most meets. She does what she needs to do to get better. Last year, our schedule kind of got messed up and went to the Priest River Invitational on her own and ran the 100, 200, 400 and 800, medaled in each, which was impressive. Even though it was a smaller meet, she did it on her own for the training.”

“She’s been a very, very dedicated track athlete,” Libera said. “She’s done some cross country, but she’s really clicked in to track. I know she does a lot of the good stuff, as far as eating properly and that stuff. She’s running some real good times right now. Hopefully she ends her career on a good note.”

The 5A and 4A regional meets resume today at 3 p.m. in Lewiston.
