5A REGION 1 TOURNAMENT

Coeur d’Alene’s boys and Lake City’s girls won team titles at the 5A Region 1 golf tournament Monday at Lewiston Country Club.

Coeur d’Alene, led by medalist Brayden Ogle’s 75, shot a 316, finishing 10 strokes ahead of second-place Post Falls.

Both teams qualified for state.

“The kids were tremendous grinders today; stats weren’t good, but they got it done,” Coeur d’Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. “Greens were fast, rough was thick ... they got up and down a lot.

“Brayden was a champion; he only hit 7 or 8 greens and still shot a 75.”

Lake City’s girls shot 390.

Kyla Currie of Lake City was medalist with an 83, and teammate Sami Dement was second with an 87.

“Kyla and Sami have played such great golf this year so it was nice to see them finish with such stellar performances,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “The course was playing very tough today and Lewiston has been consistent all season long, so I knew beating them on their home course wouldn’t be easy. We were down six strokes at the turn so the girls really battled well on the back nine to win by three strokes.”

Ryan Chapman of Lake City qualified for state as an individual by tying for second.

“I was pleased with Ryan’s performance today and his ability to bounce back from a few rough breaks,” Lake City coach Troy Anderson said. “He made some key shots when needed down the stretch as well.”

State is next Monday and Tuesday at Lewiston Country Club.
