Mother's Day concert in the park

The annual outdoor concert extravaganza, “A Mother’s Day Concert In the Park,” will be back starting at 2 p.m. on Sunday, May 13, at Coeur d’Alene City Park.

“This concert not only closes out the school year at North Idaho College, but it opens up Coeur d’Alene to the summer,” said NIC Director of Bands Bryan Hannaford. This will be the first concert in the park for Hannaford, who joined NIC less than a year ago. “The unofficial start of summer in Cd’A begins with this magnificent concert in a beautiful setting on the lake.”

The concert will feature an eclectic mix of musical works that will not only feature the NIC Wind Symphony, but also the NIC Chamber Singers, directed by NIC Choral Instructor Max Mendez. Vocal soloists will perform a few popular favorites like “Phantom of the Opera,” and a number of Gershwin songs featured in “Gershwin: A Tribute to Love,” arranged by Brent Heisinger. Come and celebrate mothers with songs like “S’wonderful,” “Love is Here to Stay,” “They Can’t Take That Away From Me” and “Embraceable You.”

The Chamber Singers, led by Mendez, will present two contrasting pieces of music. They will perform an arrangement of “And so it goes,” by Billy Joel, and Brazilian folk song, “O Sapo,” arranged by Steven Hatfield.

The NIC Wind Symphony will be performing a few serious new works like “ISS Flyover” by British composer Peter Meechan. The work was inspired by the International Space Station being visible in the sky over his hometown of Manchester, England, while astronauts were carrying out repair work on the outside of the station. NIC Wind Symphony is also proud to present “Up,” by Anthony O’Toole.

“He was inspired by a picture of hot air balloons the composer saw and the way they floated in the sky with the bright colors of the balloons,” Hannaford said. “There will be much more music on a beautiful day!”

In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center on NIC’s main campus. This concert is free and open to the public. Information: 208-769-3424.
