Lee S. Horn

1917 – 2018

Lee S. Horn was a husband of almost 78 years, a father to five, grandfather to 10, great-grandfather to 22, great-great-grandfather to three and a true friend to many, many more. He was born at home; the sixth of seven children.

Lee served in the Army Air Corp in World War II as a top gunner on a B-29. He helped start the rescue ambulance service and retired as an engineer for the Los Angeles City Fire Department after almost 30 years of service. He knew every street in his district and knew the alternate routes to get to the fire or emergency the quickest. He loved to go to work.

He taught us to love books, take care of ourselves, be independent and never give up. If we ran into a problem, he helped us find a solution. He loved us.

He became a father at 23 and a grandfather at 45. He was 52 when man landed on the moon. He was 56 when he took up scuba diving. He loved camping and backpacking. He learned to play the organ after age 60. He was on the internet and Facebook until just recently. If he had your email address he would write to you. He would never just forward something. He was a docent at the Reagan Library when it opened. Dad belonged to the Knights of Columbus, was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church and was once chaplain at the Elks.

We celebrated Dad’s life the Saturday following his death. Dad will be buried with his middle son at the San Fernando Mission Cemetery at a later date.

He lived a long and full life and we have been blessed. We miss you Dad.

Isaiah 43:2:

When you walk through fire, you shall not be burned; the flames shall not consume you.

A Fireman knocked at the heavenly gate

His face was scarred and old.

He stood before the Man of fate

For admission to the fold.

“What have you done,” St. Peter said

“To gain admission here?”

“I’ve been a fireman sir,” he said

“For many, many years.”

The Pearly Gates swung open wide

As St. Peter touched the bell.

“Come in and choose your harp, my son,

You’ve seen your share of hell.”
