Norwegian Waffle breakfast Saturday in Coeur d'Alene

International Waffle Day is March 25 but you can celebrate it a day early at a Norwegian Waffle Breakfast. Enjoy a variety of toppings on heart-shaped waffles 9 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, March 24 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 812 N. Fifth St., Coeur d’Alene.

Sample them with jam, whipped cream and berries or goat cheese, Jarlsberg cheese or smoked salmon. Also served will be sausage, fruit cups, juice and coffee.

Did you know Norwegians eat more waffles than anyone else in the world? Norwegian school children often take waffles in their lunch. Versatile and inexpensive, waffles are eaten not just for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but also for snacks and dessert. It’s a key comfort food throughout the nation.

Sponsored by Sons of Norway, the cost for this meal is $7 for adults, $3 for kids 6 to 12 and free for those younger than 6.

So what’s different about Norwegian waffles besides being heart-shaped? The most common spice used for flavor is cardamom, a staple in many typical Norwegian baked goods. The breakfast will also offer sour cream waffles, lemon waffles and even gluten-free waffles, as well as assorted toppings.
